The German group announced the takeover as a “major strategic step” for its expansion in the pet nutrition business in Europe.
The deal, which is expected to be officially closed later in the month, will complement Symrise pet food’s capabilities thanks to the addition of the facility that Schaffelaarbos has in Barneveld (The Netherlands).
The new facility will be added to the current 11 that Symrise has in the US after the acquisition in 2019 of ADF/IDF and IsoNova, both companies dedicated to producing protein products from chicken and eggs.
“By bringing the two leading experts in the sector together, we will expand our product range in the area of high-quality protein from eggs, enhancing at the same time further our value proposition in Taste, Nutrition and Health,” said Jean-Yves Parisot from the Symrise Executive Board.
In the first 9 months of 2021, the group registered an increase of 10% in organic sales in the Flavor & Nutrition segment – which includes pet food-, from €1,646 million ($1,751M) to €1,752 million ($1,984M).
Last July, the company acquired 5% of the Swedish pet health products provider Swedencare.
Schaffelaarbos, a manufacturer of sustainable egg proteins, posts around €25 million ($28,3M) in sales each year.
A few months ago, the Dutch company signed a joint venture agreement worth €15 million ($17M) to establish a new production facility in Turkey. The new plant is expected to start production by the end of the year.
